NESRC: Fostering Intellectual Pursuits and Social Change in Northeast India

The MANDATE of NESRC is to be a centre combining serious intellectual pursuits with involvement with persons and groups active in social change in the region. In the context of ethnic and political conflict, it is to provide a platform for groups in conflict to meet and search for solutions and not itself find solutions for them.

Given the size of the Northeast with its seven States, NESRC is to be a node for encouraging intellectual and activist pursuits in the whole region. Instead of centralising work in Guwahati, it is to help smaller units to evolve in the rest of the region.

Founded on 1st March, 2000.

Studies conducted by NESRC (2000-2023)

Research is the mainstay of North Eastern Social Research Centre (NESRC). Since a look at the research done in the region indicated that a large number of the studies were on the situation of conflicts, in its first year NESRC decided to focus not on the conflicts but to give importance on issues that can help one to understand their causes and possible solutions to them. The year of its foundation on March 2000 had only one month. NESRC began in March 2000 so no study could be done during the only month of that year. But during these early daysand in the reflection that preceded its foundation, NESRC decided that it would focus on four main areas namely, tribal issues, gender issues, livelihood issues and conflicts and peace. The first two of the studies were launched during the first full year of its existence 2001-2002.Their fieldwork was done in January-March 2001, the data were computerised and tabulated during the year. Their draft reports were got ready and sent round for feedback and were finalised during 2002-03. The studies completed during since then are classified below under these four categories:
  • I. Gender Studies
  • Walter Fernandes and Sanjay Barbora: Changing Women’s Status in the Northeast: A Comparative Study of Six Tribes. (2002)
  • Alphonsus D’Souza and Veronica Noqweno. Social Change in the Northeast. (2002)
  • Alphonsus D’Souza, Christina Kekhrieseno and Veronica Noqweno: Status of Women in North-East India: A Comparative Study of Three Ethnic Groups in North-East India, Aka, Angami and Dimasa. (2002)
  • II. Tribal Studies
  • Walter Fernandes and Gita Bharali: The Socio-Economic Situation of Some Tribes in Palizi and Bishnupur. (2002)
  • Walter Fernandes and Melvil Pereira: Changing Land Relations in the Northeast: A Comparative Study of Six Tribes and a Non-Tribal Group. (2004)
  • Alphonsus D’Souza, Suresh Shelke and Kazimuddin Ahmed: Tribal Learning Systems. (2005)
